Backup and Recovery
Backup and Recovery has long been a critical aspect of insuring business continuity for companies. The dramatic events of the past few years -- 9/11, power outages, hurricanes -- have heightened awareness of the need for a higher level of data protection. As a result, greater demands are being made on IT to protect and quickly recover the ever-growing critical data that keeps the company alive. IT departments must provide backup and recovery at much higher performance levels with less impact on users. They must find ways to accelerate backup and recovery while keeping it cost-effective. They also have to sift through all the various techniques for backup and recovery to identify the best fit for their users and their companies.
Many companies assume that their data is well protected if their core servers are backed up. Server backup is an essential component of data protection, but many companies do not have effective technology in place that will enable them to resume operations quickly after a failure. Part of this problem lies in the fact that an estimated 60 percent of business-critical data resides unprotected on employees' desktops or laptops. Data at remote and branch offices is likewise often unprotected because of the hardware and administration costs involved. The loss of this data inevitably results in lost revenues, lost productivity, and lost customer confidence.
Ensuring consistently high performance is one of IT's biggest challenges. Consider today's business applications: the multi-tiered and distributed infrastructures of Web client front-ends, Web servers, middleware, networking, and database and storage components on different operating platforms containing homegrown and commercial components that interact closely with each other and with external and legacy systems.
The need here is for a powerful centralized solution that protects data not only at the data center but also at remote offices, in home offices, and on the road.
